JOB DESCRIPTION HEARD COUNTY SCHOOLS:  Mechanic

FLSA JOB CLASSIFICATION:  Non-Exempt

 

REPORTS TO:  Fleet Maintenance Supervisor

 

SUMMARY: 

Performs complex and difficult diagnostic mechanical repairs on a variety of cars, trucks, buses, and related equipment including minor diesel engine repairs (fuel filters, oil changes, and general service). 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Duties performed typically in, but not limited to the division maintenance department and in schools throughout the system. Frequent walking, standing, lifting, up to approximately 50 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 100 pounds may be required. Work is typically performed walking or standing. Other working conditions include working near moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock and exposure to germs and potentially blood borne pathogens. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for diagnosing and repairing maintenance and mechanical problems; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. 

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

Educational Level:  High School Diploma or GED required

  • Certification/License Required: Valid Georgia Driver’s License and safe driving record; must be able to obtain a valid Georgia Class B Commercial Driver’s License within 60 days/2 months of start date 
  • Experience:   Minimum 2 years mechanical experience or completion of Automotive Tech degree from  Accredited College or Trade School. (Will consider experience instead of degree)
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:  Written and oral communication; mechanical; computer literate 

The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements. 

 

JOB OBJECTIVES:

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance. 
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs System’s fleet vehicles.
  • Utilizes a wide variety of test equipment, standard tools, specialty tools and reference manuals. 
  • Completes paperwork for preventive maintenance records, inspection reports, repair orders and labor sheets. 
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair work on system’s fleet vehicles and maintenance equipment. 
  • Provides mechanical advice to mechanic helpers. 
  • Maintains a clean and safe working area. 
  • Conducts road tests on vehicles. 
  • Answers emergency road service calls and repairs on-site or tows defective equipment, up to 10,000 pounds, to maintenance facility for repair. 
  • Completes repairs within an acceptable time frame when compared to appropriate available flat repair manuals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate supervisor.
